The word “catechism” comes from the Greek word catechesis which means “instruction by word of mouth.” Therefore, a catechism can be defined as a systematic tool for teaching doctrine to children and adults. The elders of Cornerstone Community Church agree that the New City Catechism is a very good and useful discipleship tool, but it is only a concise summary of some of the foundational doctrinal truths of Scripture. It is subordinate to Scripture in all respects and does not serve as a defining statement of faith for Cornerstone Community Church and its members. It is merely a discipleship tool. In light of this, the pastors and elders will build upon this basic tool by providing this weekly blog post, which will highlight our weekly memory verse(s), direct you to additional Scriptures to read/study, provide further explanation, connect the doctrinal truth to our own church’s Statement of Faith and encourage application of doctrine to life.

Q1: What is our only hope in life and death?

A: That we are not our own but belong, body and soul, both in life and death, to God and to our Savior Jesus Christ.

KIDS’ ANSWER: That we are not our own but belong to God.

SCRIPTURE TO MEMORIZE (kids’ portion in bold):

  • Romans 14:7-8 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.

ADDITIONAL SCRIPTURES TO READ: Psalm 24:1-2; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20; Colossians 3:1-4

LIFE APPLICATION: As creatures made in the image of God, we belong to Him. However, because we inherited a sin nature from Adam, we are not automatically God’s children but are commanded to repent and believe in Jesus Christ. When we turn from our sin, and place our faith in the Lord Jesus we become children of God, the Lord’s possession (we “belong” to Him). As a result, every part of our lives is now His to govern or direct. Therefore, the more we grow in Christ the deeper should be our daily surrender to Him of all that we are and all that we have.

CONNECTION TO CORNERSTONE’S STATEMENT OF FAITH: The first seven questions in the NCC focus on God, His creation of man, and our duty to bring Him glory. Therefore, take a few moments to review those related portions of our Statement of Faith.

  • GOD - We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons:  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  (Deut. 6:4; Jn. 1-3, 6:27; Acts 5:3,4; Mt. 28:19)
  • MANKIND - We believe that man was created in the image of God, but fell into sin, and is therefore lost, and that only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained.  (Gen. 1:26, 27, 2:7, 22, 3:1-6; Rom. 3:9-12,23, 5:12,18, 6:23Jn. 3:3, 5-7)
  • SALVATION - We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all who believe, and only such as receive Jesus by faith are born of the Holy Spirit, become children of God, and are saved for eternity.  (Heb. 9:22Mt. 26:28; 1 Pet. 1:18,19; Rom. 3:24, 25; Rom. 5:19, 18; Jn. 1:12; 3:16; Eph. 2:8,9)
