The word “catechism” comes from the Greek word catechesis which means “instruction by word of mouth.” Therefore, a catechism can be defined as a systematic tool for teaching doctrine to children and adults. The elders of Cornerstone Community Church agree that the New City Catechism is a very good and useful discipleship tool, but it is only a concise summary of some of the foundational doctrinal truths of Scripture. It is subordinate to Scripture in all respects and does not serve as a defining statement of faith for Cornerstone Community Church and its members. It is merely a discipleship tool. In light of this, the pastors and elders will build upon this basic tool by providing this weekly blog post, which will highlight our weekly memory verse(s), direct you to additional Scriptures to read/study, provide further explanation, connect the doctrinal truth to our own church’s Statement of Faith and encourage application of doctrine to life.

Q2: What is God?

A: God is the creator and sustainer of everyone and everything. He is eternal, infinite, and unchangeable in his power and perfection, goodness and glory, wisdom, justice, and truth. Nothing happens except through him and by his will.

KIDS’ ANSWER: God is the creator of everyone and everything.

SCRIPTURE TO MEMORIZE (kids’ portion in bold):

  • Isaiah 46:9b-10 "for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose"

ADDITIONAL SCRIPTURES TO READ: Genesis 1; Psalm 86:8-10, 15; John 1:1-3; Colossians 1:15-17; Hebrews 1:1-3

LIFE APPLICATION: Scripture is the revelation of God, the Creator, of whom all of nature testifies day and night (Ps. 19). In fact, the Bible opens with these words: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth (Gen. 1:1). However, God did not simply create the universe and then turn around and walk away from it to let it run on its own (as Deism teaches); He actively sustains the earth and cares for His creatures. He does this through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, through whom He created the universe and upholds all things by the Word of His power. It is in God that each and every one of us lives and moves and has our being (Acts 17:28); that is, we cannot even take our next breath apart from Him. This providential care extends to all people, even unbelievers, as Jesus testified, For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust (Matt. 5:45). However, toward believers—those of us who have become His children through repentant faith in His crucified, buried, and risen Son, God is our heavenly Father and, therefore, His care is even more personal and sufficient. Not only this, but God is working all things toward the fulfillment of His kind and good intentions toward us, and according to the counsel of His will (Eph. 1:11). This should lead us to trust Him with all our needs, casting all our cares upon Him because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). Are you anxious today? Go to the Lord in prayer—confess your daily, moment-by-moment dependence upon Him to meet all of your needs.

CONNECTION TO CORNERSTONE’S STATEMENT OF FAITH: The first seven questions in the NCC focus on God, His creation of man, and our duty to bring Him glory. Therefore, take a few moments to review those related portions of our Statement of Faith.

  • GOD - We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons:  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  (Deut. 6:4; Jn. 1-3, 6:27; Acts 5:3,4; Mt. 28:19)

  • MANKIND - We believe that man was created in the image of God, but fell into sin, and is therefore lost, and that only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained.  (Gen. 1:26, 27, 2:7, 22, 3:1-6; Rom. 3:9-12,23, 5:12,18, 6:23Jn. 3:3, 5-7)

  • SALVATION - We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all who believe, and only such as receive Jesus by faith are born of the Holy Spirit, become children of God, and are saved for eternity.  (Heb. 9:22Mt. 26:28; 1 Pet. 1:18,19; Rom. 3:24, 25; Rom. 5:19, 18; Jn. 1:12; 3:16; Eph. 2:8,9)
