Question 4 in the New City Catechism

Q4: How and why did God create us?

A: God created us male and female in his own image to know him, love him, live with him, and glorify him. And it is right that we who were created by God should live to his glory.

KIDS’ ANSWER: God created us male and female in his own image to glorify him.

SCRIPTURE TO MEMORIZE (kids’ portion in bold):

  • Genesis 1:27: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them."

ADDITIONAL SCRIPTURES TO READ: Genesis 1:26-27; Deuteronomy 6:4-5; Psalm 139:13-16; Matthew 22:34-38;

1 Peter 2:9-10, 4:10-11

LIFE APPLICATION: One of the most encouraging and affirming thoughts we can ponder is that God created us. Contrary to the theory of evolution, God emphatically declares that you and I did not evolve from lower life forms through natural selection over eons of time. God purposely created you and I from the overflow of his love and glory. We were personally crafted by our glorious Creator with love and care and purpose (Psalm 139:13-16). And he created us male and female (Genesis 1:27). As much as we may hear and read today where people try to assign some other gender (or no gender) to themselves, we simply cannot change the fact that God created us male or female. And that distinction is not only factual, it’s absolutely beautiful! We should embrace it with enthusiasm! We were made in the image of God for very specific purposes. He did not create us to live independently of him. We were created to know God, to love him and to live in close fellowship with him. God has revealed himself in nature (Romans 1:19-20), in history and in Scripture. There is no more glorious being than the one true God and the more we get to know him (his glory, holiness, righteousness, power, wisdom, love, mercy compassion, grace, etc.), the more we love him and are awestruck by him. There is no greater satisfaction in life than knowing, treasuring ane worshiping our glorious Creator God. We also see throughout Scripture that God’s purpose for us is to glorify him (1 Corinthians 10:31) – to live in such a way that God is seen through our lives, that God is honored in our righteous behavior and our thoughts, and that God is exalted and glorified through our worship of him. It’s not only right that God calls us to glorify Him because he gave us life and breath and everything (Acts 17:25), it’s what brings us our deepest satisfaction!

CONNECTION TO CORNERSTONE’S STATEMENT OF FAITH: The first seven questions in the NCC focus on God, His creation of man, and our duty to bring Him glory. Therefore, take a few moments to review those related portions of our Statement of Faith.

  • GOD - We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons:  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  (Deut. 6:4; Jn. 1-3, 6:27; Acts 5:3,4; Mt. 28:19)
  • MANKIND - We believe that man was created in the image of God, but fell into sin, and is therefore lost, and that only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained.  (Gen. 1:26, 27, 2:7, 22, 3:1-6; Rom. 3:9-12,23, 5:12,18, 6:23Jn. 3:3, 5-7)
  • SALVATION - We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all who believe, and only such as receive Jesus by faith are born of the Holy Spirit, become children of God, and are saved for eternity.  (Heb. 9:22Mt. 26:28; 1 Pet. 1:18,19; Rom. 3:24, 25; Rom. 5:19, 18; Jn. 1:12; 3:16; Eph. 2:8,9)
