New City Catechism Question #5

Q5: What else did God create?

A: God created all things by his powerful Word, and all his creation was very good; everything flourished under his loving rule.

KIDS’ ANSWER: God created all things and all his creation was very good.

SCRIPTURE TO MEMORIZE (kids’ portion in bold):

  • Genesis 1:31: "And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day."

ADDITIONAL SCRIPTURES TO READ: Psalm 19:1-6, Romans 1:19-20, Hebrews 1:1-4, 3:3-4; Colossians 1:15-17

LIFE APPLICATION: One of the foundational questions mankind has been grappling with as long as we’ve been here has been “how did the universe get here?” Was there some small dot of matter in the beginning that spontaneously exploded into everything we see? The testimony of God’s Word is that God spoke everything into existence. He said, and it was. “And God said, ‘Let there be light…’” (Gen. 1:3). He didn’t need a supply of material to make things. He made it all “ex nihilo,” or out of nothing. In God’s almighty power and infinite, loving wisdom, he created the universe – the galaxies, the earth, water, plants, animals, insects, sea creatures, you and I – everything. “And God saw everything he had made, and behold, it was very good” (Gen. 1:31). It’s magnificent! When you’re taking a walk from here to there, take time to notice the wonder of all that you see. Notice the colors, the beauty, the order, the breeze, the warm sun, the stars at night, etc. Take time to thank God and worship him for his almighty power to create it all, his incredible wisdom in how everything works together, and his providential love in providing all we need to sustain life. The creation screams out the existence of God (Romans 1:19-20)! “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge” (Psalm 19:1-2). And as magnificent as his creation is, God is infinitely more magnificent, because it all came from his unfathomable brilliance and almighty power (Hebrews 3:3-4). He not only created everything, but he is sustaining everything (Hebrews 1:3, Colossians 1:17). Take time to worship and thank God for his creation. It’ll fill your soul with joy and awe.

CONNECTION TO CORNERSTONE’S STATEMENT OF FAITH: The first seven questions in the NCC focus on God, His creation of man, and our duty to bring Him glory. Therefore, take a few moments to review those related portions of our Statement of Faith.

  • GOD - We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons:  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  (Deut. 6:4; Jn. 1-3, 6:27; Acts 5:3,4; Mt. 28:19)
  • MANKIND - We believe that man was created in the image of God, but fell into sin, and is therefore lost, and that only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained.  (Gen. 1:26, 27, 2:7, 22, 3:1-6; Rom. 3:9-12,23, 5:12,18, 6:23Jn. 3:3, 5-7)
  • SALVATION - We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all who believe, and only such as receive Jesus by faith are born of the Holy Spirit, become children of God, and are saved for eternity.  (Heb. 9:22Mt. 26:28; 1 Pet. 1:18,19; Rom. 3:24, 25; Rom. 5:19, 18; Jn. 1:12; 3:16; Eph. 2:8,9)
