New City Catechism Question #6

Q6:How can we glorify God?

A: We glorify God by enjoying him, loving him, trusting him, and by obeying his will, commands, and law.

KIDS’ ANSWER: By loving him and by obeying his commands and law.

SCRIPTURE TO MEMORIZE (kids’ portion in bold):

1 Corinthians 10:31: "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."

  • ADDITIONAL SCRIPTURES TO READ: Psalm 16:11, Isaiah 43:7,  John 15:8, 1 Peter 4:10

LIFE APPLICATION: There’s a question that nearly every human being on the planet will get around to asking himself or herself at some point. And that question is, Why am I here? What’s my purpose? It’s a very good question. And extremely important. If you miss your ultimate purpose in life, you’ll wander through life with questions, doubts, anxieties, aimlessness and stress. But God didn’t leave you in the dark! He told you what your purpose is! You were created by God to glorify him. That’s your ultimate purpose. And when you embrace that purpose, you’ll live your life with greater joy, hope, peace and a sense of meaning.

So how do we glorify God? To begin with, we glorify God by growing in our knowledge of him as he revealed himself in the Scriptures and then soaking and savoring in what we learn about him. We all enjoy seeing something beautiful and breathtaking. Maybe it’s an awe-inspiring work of art created by a master artist. Maybe it’s a stunning sunset bursting with color reflecting on the ocean at dusk. But there is no more glorious and awesome being in all the universe than our Creator God. The more you know of him, the more you will enjoy him, worship him and glorify him. The more you get to know his everlasting love, his great faithfulness and his matchless wisdom, the more you will love him, trust him, and obey him. And in all this, you glorify him. No matter what else you do in your life, in these ways you bring God glory. And as you bring him glory, you will fulfill your ultimate purpose in life.

CONNECTION TO CORNERSTONE’S STATEMENT OF FAITH: The first seven questions in the NCC focus on God, His creation of man, and our duty to bring Him glory. Therefore, take a few moments to review those related portions of our Statement of Faith.

  • GOD - We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons:  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  (Deut. 6:4Jn. 1-36:27Acts 5:3,4Mt. 28:19)
  • MANKIND - We believe that man was created in the image of God, but fell into sin, and is therefore lost, and that only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained.  (Gen. 1:26272:7223:1-6Rom. 3:9-12,235:12,186:23;  Jn. 3:35-7)
  • SALVATION - We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all who believe, and only such as receive Jesus by faith are born of the Holy Spirit, become children of God, and are saved for eternity.  (Heb. 9:22Mt. 26:281 Pet. 1:18,19Rom. 3:2425Rom. 5:1,  918Jn. 1:123:16Eph. 2:8,9)
