NEW CITY CATECHISM - QUESTION 19

Q19: Is there any way to escape punishment and be brought back into God’s favor?

A: Yes, to satisfy his justice, God himself, out of mere mercy, reconciles us to himself and delivers us from sin and from the punishment for sin, by a Redeemer.

Kid’s Answer:

Yes, God reconciles us to himself by a Redeemer.

SCRIPTURE TO MEMORIZE:

Isaiah 53:5  “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

ADDITIONAL SCRIPTURES TO READ:

Romans 2:4-5, 3:23-25; John 3:16-18, 5:24; Colossians 2:13-14

LIFE APPLICATION:

We’ve all seen those stressful movies with spectacular car chases. The good guys are being chased all through the city. They narrowly escape being cut off – once and then twice. They swerve wildly and crash through the wooden fruit cart sending debris everywhere. They jump the curb as people scatter. And then they reach a dead end. Cornered. Doomed, as the bad guys are closing in. And then, at exactly the right time, the helicopters swoop in and rescue the good guys. It makes for an exciting movie!

But you and I need that same rescue.

We go about our lives day by day, ignoring God. Serving false gods. Disobeying his commands in Scripture. Running up a huge debt of sin. We get to the end of our lives and we’re cornered. Because of our sin, we are absolutely doomed to face certain judgment at the hands of a perfectly holy and just God. There’s no escaping it. On our own, there’s just no way we can avoid it. Sin must be punished and the punishment is terrifyingly severe: separation from God in hell forever.

But the great news is that God, in his amazing love and mercy, sent someone to rescue us! He sent his one and only Son to take that punishment for us in our place! By his death on the cross and his victorious resurrection, Jesus reconciles all who place their faith in him. Believers are redeemed and delivered from their sin through the gracious atoning work of Christ on the cross on their behalf.

If you haven’t trusted in Christ and his finished work on the cross, don’t wait. This is a time of grace. Today is the day of salvation. Thank God for his amazing love and mercy.

CONNECTION TO CORNERSTONE’S STATEMENT OF FAITH:

MANKIND
We believe that man was created in the image of God, but fell into sin, and is therefore lost, and that only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained.  (Gen. 1:26272:7223:1-6Rom. 3:9-12,235:12,186:23;  Jn. 3:35-7)

JESUS CHRIST
We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true Man, having been conceived of the Holy  Spirit and born of  the Virgin Mary.  He who knew no sin died on the cross a sacrifice for  our sins according to the Scriptures.  Further, He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into  Heaven, where at the right hand of the Majesty on High, He now is our High Priest and Advocate.  (Is. 7:14Mt. 1:18-25;  Lk. 1:26-36;  Col. 2:9;  1 Jn. 5:20;  Mk. 10:45;  Heb. 2:9;  Lk. 24:23-40;  1 Cor. 15;  Acts 1:1-111 Pet. 3:221 Jn. 2:2Heb. 4:167:25)

SALVATION
We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all who believe, and only such as receive Jesus by faith are born of the Holy Spirit, become children of God, and are saved for eternity.  (Heb. 9:22;     Mt. 26:281 Pet. 1:18,19Rom. 3:2425Rom. 5:1,  918Jn. 1:123:16Eph. 2:8,9)
