NEW CITY CATECHISM - QUESTION 20

Q 20: Who is the Redeemer?

A: The only Redeemer is the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, in whom God became man and bore the penalty for sin himself.

KIDS’ ANSWER:

The only Redeemer is the Lord Jesus Christ.

SCRIPTURE TO MEMORIZE:

1 Timothy 2:5 “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

LIFE APPLICATION:

How do we get to heaven? Ask a dozen people on the street this question and you'll be startled at the various answers you receive. The Bible leaves no room for interpretation however. The only way to inherit eternal salvation and be redeemed by God is through repentance and faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (Acts 20:21). He is the Redeemer, and only through His death and resurrection are we able to have a restored relationship with God. Jesus Himself tells us in John 14:6 “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. NO ONE comes to the Father except through ME.”

In addition to understanding why Christ is the Redeemer, we must also understand why we are in need of a Redeemer. Colossians 1:13-14 states, “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

Mankind was cursed because of the entrance of sin into the world (Genesis 3). Death and corruption spread rampant throughout physical creation and in the heart of every man (Psalm 51:5; Romans 1:18-25). We were all at one time under the “domain of darkness,” living in rebellion against the holy God who could not let sin go unpunished, and on a crash course to meet the full wrath of our Creator (Ephesians 2:1-3). But here is where the story takes an awesome turn. Even though we all deserved wrath and condemnation and were heading toward it, He still loved us and desired to offer us a different path…

(Enter Jesus Christ.)

Christ lived the sinless life we never could. He paid the price for our sin and brought God’s plan of redemption into effect. Through Christ as our Redeemer, we were rescued from our sin, and forgiven (2 Corinthians 5:21). Through Christ as our Redeemer, we were changed from being children of wrath, to become children of God (Ephesians 2:1-10).  Through Christ as our Redeemer, we have new life (2 Corinthians 5:17). In the words of Kristian Stanfill’s famous song, “Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe, sin had left a crimson stain, he washed it white as snow.”

What’s required of us? To believe the gospel. We must put our faith in Christ as our Redeemer, as our Lord and Savior. Jesus did the work, we must simply receive the gift. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23)

So, the question must be asked: have you received this gift? Is Jesus Christ your Redeemer?
