NEW CITY CATECHISM - QUESTION 21

Q21: What sort of Redeemer is needed to bring us back to God?

A: One who is truly human and also truly God.

KIDS’ ANSWER: One who is truly human and also truly God.

SCRIPTURE TO MEMORIZE:

Isaiah 9:6 "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

ADDITIONAL SCRIPTURES TO READ:
John 4:6-7; Colossians 1:15-19; Hebrews 1:1-4

LIFE APPLICATION:

There are many things in life that are hard to understand. How can a fully-loaded jet plane weighing 300 metric tons (about 660,000 pounds) take off and fly in the air? How can our brains, made of squishy organic material, store such incredible amounts of information? How can an ant carry as much as 50 times it’s own body weight? That would be like me picking up and carrying over 8,000 pounds! The list of questions can go on and on.

There are lots of teachings in Scripture that are also hard to understand. One of the most mind-bending doctrines is the Bible’s clear teaching that Jesus Christ is fully man and fully God! It’s easy for us to understand one or the other. Man: yes. God: yes. But he’s both! Hard to wrap your mind around, but absolutely true.

Jesus was born as a baby boy. He grew up into a man like all baby boys grow up. He got hungry and ate food, got tired and slept, worked to earn a living, talked with other people, got fatigued, got thirsty and drank water, bled when he was cut, and did all the kinds of things that humans do. Except sin (Heb. 4:15).

But the Bible also clearly teaches that Jesus wasn’t only a human. He was also fully God. He was deity as much as the Father and the Holy Spirit are deity. Not a bit less. Jesus didn’t start his existence when he took on flesh. He existed before all creation and dwelt in eternity past with the Father and the Spirit. Jesus was the instrumental means by which God created everything (Col. 1:16). Jesus performed acts that only God can do: he healed the sick, raised the dead, created bread and fish, knew what people were thinking, walked on water, and so on.

Why is this so important to understand? If Jesus were not fully God and fully man, he could not have been our Savior. It would have been impossible. We will see why it was important that Jesus was the God-man in the coming weeks.

CONNECTION TO CORNERSTONE’S STATEMENT OF FAITH:

JESUS CHRIST
We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true Man, having been conceived of the Holy  Spirit and born of  the Virgin Mary.  He who knew no sin died on the cross a sacrifice for  our sins according to the Scriptures.  Further, He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into  Heaven, where at the right hand of the Majesty on High, He now is our High Priest and Advocate.  (Is. 7:14Mt. 1:18-25;  Lk. 1:26-36;  Col. 2:9;  1 Jn. 5:20;  Mk. 10:45;  Heb. 2:9;  Lk. 24:23-40;  1 Cor. 15;  Acts 1:1-111 Pet. 3:221 Jn. 2:2Heb. 4:167:25)
