NEW CITY CATECHISM - QUESTION 23

Q23: Why must the Redeemer be truly God?

A: That because of his divine nature his obedience and suffering would be perfect and effective; and also that he would be able to bear the righteous anger of God against sin and yet overcome death.

KIDS’ ANSWER: That because of his divine nature his obedience and suffering would be perfect and effective.

SCRIPTURE TO MEMORIZE:

Acts 2:24: God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

ADDITIONAL SCRIPTURES TO READ:

John 10:18; Revelation 1:18; Hebrews 10:11-14; Colossians 2:9

LIFE APPLICATION:

In the early centuries of the church, there were groups that denied the true humanity of Jesus. Today after two centuries of liberal theology and rationalism, the opposite is true. The true deity of Jesus is challenged. This is an attack on the bedrock of biblical Christianity.

Scripture testifies of the Redeemer’s divinity before his birth (Isaiah 9:6; Matthew 1:23), during His life (John 1:18; Matthew 26:63-64), after His death and resurrection (Titus 2:13; Hebrews 1:3). Jesus' divinity is evidenced in the names He possess (John 5:25; Matthew 22:41-46), the attributes He demonstrates (Matthew 28:18), the works that He performs (Mark 2:1-12; Matthew 11:4-6), and the worship He receives (John 9:38; Matthew 21:14-16).

This reality that Jesus was God in flesh is critical to our salvation. If Jesus were only a mere man, tainted by Adam’s sin nature, then his life and obedience would not have been perfect, as God’s law demanded. His sacrifice could not have redeemed anyone. Only an infinitely holy and pure sacrifice could bear the penalty of sin for the human race. His death had infinite value to effectively pay the price for the sin of the world. And only God Himself could pass through death and bring freedom from it (Acts 2:24).

We should contemplate our sin against a holy and righteous God and then realize that God did not send a third party to redeem us. God came in person for us (John 1:14)! By His sacrifice God saves us and sanctifies us (Hebrews 10:14). By His authority God will come again for us (Hebrews 9:28). And because Jesus was God, we will not taste the second death and will live with Him forever (1 Corinthians 15.20-26; Revelation 21:3-4)!

CONNECTION TO CORNERSTONE’S STATEMENT OF FAITH:

JESUS CHRIST
We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true Man, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.  He who knew no sin died on the cross a sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures.  Further, He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into Heaven, where at the right hand of the Majesty on High, He now is our High Priest and Advocate.  (Is. 7:14Mt. 1:18-25;  Lk. 1:26-36;  Col. 2:9;  1 Jn. 5:20;  Mk. 10:45;  Heb. 2:9;  Lk. 24:23-40;  1 Cor. 15;  Acts 1:1-111 Pet. 3:221 Jn. 2:2Heb. 4:167:25)
