Coronavirus Updates as of March 13, 2020

Dear Cornerstone family,

The Bible teaches that God, as a gift of common grace, has delegated some of His authority to human government for the protection of its citizens (Rom. 13:1-7). In response to this God-ordained authority structure, believers are called to honor and submit to civil leaders (1 Pet. 2:13-17) unless, of course, they command us to disobey God (Acts 5:29). Governor Mike DeWine’s decision, yesterday, to ban public gatherings of over 100 people provides us with a unique opportunity to honor our leaders, while also loving others, while fearing and trusting God above all.

To be clear, religious gatherings are not included in the governor’s ban, due to his high regard for our First Amendment right to free speech. However, he has requested churches honor it, if possible. Therefore, in response, we believe that following the guidance given to us in this health crisis is one way to honor civil leaders, and love our neighbors well in a united effort to slow down the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). Also, as we embrace the biblical truth that every church member is indispensable to the proper functioning of the body of Christ, we should especially honor and watch over the weak who are among us (1 Cor. 12:22).

Therefore, the March 15th Sunday service and children’s ministries are cancelled as public gatherings.

A small group of leaders and members will gather in the sanctuary for the purpose of producing a livestream service for your edification and instruction. Please join us online by going to the Watch Live page on our website by 9:50 AM, so as not to miss any of the service.

In addition to this Sunday’s gathering, we believe it is prudent to also cancel the following:

  • Youth meeting, tonight, March 13 and March 20 (the Renown trip is also cancelled).
  • Men’s breakfast this Saturday, March 14.
  • All Cornerstone events through Sunday, April 5, are cancelled. This includes Growth Groups, nursing home service, classes, and meetings. Growth groups will begin meeting via video conferencing. Leaders will contact their groups.
  • Choir practice is cancelled until further notice.

Please continue to help us by following the requests outlined in Wednesday’s post. Again, if you or someone in your family is diagnosed with COVID-19, please let us know immediately so that we can provide necessary spiritual care and support. Please continue to follow the counsel given on Wednesday. If you have not yet read Wednesday’s communication, please do so now. To love one another well we need to have a unified understanding of what is before us, and our responsibility to love and honor one another, as we grow in Christlike character.

The church office will remain open as long as the health of the staff is not compromised. Please continue to pray for this outbreak to be brought under control, and that the Lord will use it for the strengthening of His church and the spread of the gospel in our day. These are unique days to be serving our sovereign God!

Thanks in advance for your understanding. If you have any questions about our response to this crisis, please feel free to talk to me or our staff or elders.

On behalf of the Cornerstone elders,

Paul
