Throughout biblical history, singing together has been a high point in the worship experience of

God’s people. When we join our minds, emotions, and wills in one unified voice of praise to the Lord, declaring His wondrous works and expressing our dependence upon Him, the name of Jesus Christ our Savior is glorified. As a result, those who know the Lord are built up in the faith, and those who do not yet know Him witness something extraordinary when we worship as one body.

That’s why I’m excited to tell you about something new. As an aid to our congregational worship and help you and your family prepare for Sunday worship, we have created an online playlist of songs that we sing here at Cornerstone. Why has this playlist been created? Let me give three reasons.

Singing is an indispensable element in worship.

Singing does not equal worship, but it is an indispensable part of it. A non-singing Christian is an oxymoron. When we experience the saving grace of God in salvation He puts a new song in our heart and a desire to use our voices to praise His name. Both the Old and New Testaments direct us to sing to the Lord and to sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to one another in gathered worship (Ps. 35:18; 96:1; 98:1; 149:1; Col. 3:16; Eph. 5:18-20). This playlist is based upon the assumption that the better we know our songs the stronger our praise and mutual edification will be when we gather as God’s people. As a result, our gracious Lord will be magnified all the more.

Sunday is not when worship begins, but when it reaches its highpoint.

Worship is not an event; it is a lifestyle. God’s Word calls us to meditate on the Word daily and to make praise and prayer an ongoing pattern of life in personal worship (Joshua 1:8; Ps. 119:147; 143:8; Matt. 4:4). After 25 years of pastoral ministry in two different churches, I’ve concluded that those who “get the most out of worship” at church are those who have a lively relationship with God throughout the week. This lifestyle of worship brings greater blessing to our times of gathered worship. This playlist was created to serve you by being a blessing and tool for personal worship. As a result, our Sunday worship will increasingly become the highpoint of our week.

Parents, fathers in particular, are directed by Scripture to lead their family in worship.

Again, worship is not a Sunday-only event. It is a lifestyle of bowing our hearts before the God of the Word, confessing our sins, and lifting our voices in prayers of supplication and thanksgiving. As a father, I feel the weight of providing spiritual leadership in my home (Gen. 18:19; Ps. 78:4; Eph. 6:4). When fathers lead their families in worship at home, one fruitful result is that children are trained for the gathered worship of God’s church. This playlist was created to serve you (and me!) as a parent, thus helping your children to become worshipers of the Lord.

Surely there are other benefits we experience, as we tune our hearts to sing His praises, but these are a few to consider for now. I hope you enjoy the Cornerstone worship playlist.
