Q14: Did God create us unable to keep his law?

A: No, but because of the disobedience of our first parents, Adam and Eve, all of creation is fallen; we are all born in sin and guilt, corrupt in our nature and unable to keep God’s law.

Kid’s Answer:

No, but because of the disobedience of Adam and Eve we are all born in sin and guilt, unable to keep God’s law.

Romans 5:12  “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.

Genesis 3, Romans 5:12-21

When God created the first two human beings, Adam and Eve, they were lovingly made in the image of God (Gen. 1:26). He created them with the capability of obeying his will for them and there was nothing in the way of their relationship with him. God expressed his will for them in specific commands, including the command to not eat the fruit of a specific tree in the garden, and they obeyed. Until. Until temptation came along. Adam and Eve were vulnerable to temptation, just like we are. The wicked serpent tempted them to doubt God’s goodness toward them, twisted God’s commands (Gen. 3:1, 4-5), and Eve fell to that temptation. And then Adam fell (Gen. 3:6). They had all kinds of fruit and other food in great abundance and they ate the fruit God commanded them to avoid. Immediately they knew they were guilty of sin and tried to hide from God (Gen. 3:8).

As a result of their sin, every human being born after them was tainted with the guilt of that original sin along with the inclination and tendency to sin themselves. You and I are not sinners because we sin, we sin because we’re sinners by nature (Romans 5:12-21). Even though we do many good things, our hearts are constantly drawn toward sin and evil, so even the good things we do are tainted by selfish motives, self-interest, a lack of gratitude to God, ignoring God’s purposes and glory, etc. The prophet Jeremiah declares, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” Our very nature is corrupted by sin and we are incapable of perfectly keeping God’s law. But good news is around the corner! There’s someone who kept God’s law for us. Stay tuned!

We believe that man was created in the image of God, but fell into sin, and is therefore lost, and that only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained.  (Gen. 1:26272:7223:1-6Rom. 3:9-12,235:12,186:23;  Jn. 3:35-7)
