New City Catechism - Question 29

Q29:  How can we be saved?

A:  Only by faith in Jesus Christ and in his substitutionary atoning death on the cross; so even though we are guilty of having disobeyed God and are still inclined to all evil, nevertheless, God, without any merit of our own but only by pure grace, imputes to us the perfect righteousness of Christ when we repent and believe in him.

Kids’ Answer:

Only by faith in Jesus Christ and in his substitutionary atoning death on the cross.

Ephesians 2:8-9

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."

2 Cor. 5:21, 1 John 5:13

Life is full of preparation. All through school we’re constantly preparing. We prepare for the next homework assignment, the next test, the next final. We prepare for job interviews. We prepare for presentations. We prepare for our financial future.

But far and away the most important part of life we must prepare for is our eternal future. We must prepare for our death. Since we know that all of us will eventually die, we must prepare to meet God, because all of us will face Him after we die. There are no exceptions. Whether people believe in God or not, whether they’re Christians or not, they will face their Creator one day (Heb. 9:27).

As we have been discussing in prior posts, we know that the God of the Bible is the Creator of all mankind. He alone had the authority to set the standard of holiness revealed in the Scriptures for all of us to live by. Sadly, we have all broken God’s commands and deserve judgment. But thankfully, since God is also gloriously loving and merciful, he made a way for sinful, guilty mankind to be rescued from the coming wrath.

So we come to today’s question: How can we be saved?

There’s only one way to be saved. And God made it very clear in the Bible.

We can’t earn our salvation through doing good works. All of our good works are tainted with sin (Isaiah 64:6).

We are saved only through faith in Jesus Christ and in what Jesus did to purchase our salvation. He received the wrath of God on the cross for the sins of all who would believe. He took our judgment for sin in our place.

And for all who place their trust in Jesus Christ and his atoning sacrifice on the cross for their sin, he forgives all our sin and credits to us the perfect righteousness of Christ (2 Cor. 5:21). Jesus takes our sin and gives us his holiness. Therefore, we stand before God perfectly holy. What an amazing and undeserved gift!

And because our sin has been entirely wiped away and we have the righteousness of Christ, we can have complete confidence that our future is secure (1 John 5:13). When we face God after we die, he will warmly and happily welcome us into the joy of his presence (Matt. 25:34)!

We believe that man was created in the image of God, but fell into sin, and is therefore lost, and that only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained.  (Gen. 1:26272:7223:1-6Rom. 3:9-12,235:12,186:23;  Jn. 3:35-7)

We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true Man, having been conceived of the Holy  Spirit and born of  the Virgin Mary.  He who knew no sin died on the cross a sacrifice for  our sins according to the Scriptures.  Further, He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into  Heaven, where at the right hand of the Majesty on High, He now is our High Priest and Advocate.  (Is. 7:14Mt. 1:18-25;  Lk. 1:26-36;  Col. 2:9;  1 Jn. 5:20;  Mk. 10:45;  Heb. 2:9;  Lk. 24:23-40;  1 Cor. 15;  Acts 1:1-111 Pet. 3:221 Jn. 2:2Heb. 4:167:25)

We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all who believe, and only such as receive Jesus by faith are born of the Holy Spirit, become children of God, and are saved for eternity.  (Heb. 9:22;     Mt. 26:281 Pet. 1:18,19Rom. 3:2425Rom. 5:1,  918Jn. 1:123:16Eph. 2:8,9)
