Frequently Asked Questions
What’s a Growth Group?
A Growth Group is a group of usually 7 to 15 people who meet together regularly to study the Bible, discuss how it applies to their lives, personally connect through fellowship, and pray for one another.
Why should I be in one?
Biblically, every Christian is a disciple. A disciple is a learner, a follower of Jesus Christ. The Growth Group is our primary means of helping people grow into spiritually maturing disciples. It’s where we can ask questions and learn from one another. It’s where we learn how God’s Word impacts our daily lives and how we can go about making it real and personal.
The Growth Group is also where we develop meaningful, supportive relationships with others. It’s just not possible to develop close friendships when you only see one another occasionally on Sunday mornings. Relationships take time to develop – they need regular interaction on a deeper level. That’s what Growth Groups specialize in!
What are we aiming to grow in? We expect to :
– grow in our knowledge of the Bible
– grow in our love of our Savior, Jesus Christ
– grow in godliness
– grow in spiritual depth
– grow in our relationships with one another
When and where do they meet?
Growth Groups meet weekly on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The groups meet in person either at the group members’ homes or at the church.
Our groups meet in the evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., but we also offer a group for women that meets on Wednesday mornings. See the chart below.
Our Growth Groups season is from September 2024 through the middle of May 2025.
What are we studying this year?
Your first Growth Group at Cornerstone:
If you are new to small group Bible studies or newer in the faith, your first Growth Group is called Starting Point.
Starting Point is a 6-week discussion group in the Gospel of Mark and it examines the nature, life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We carefully look at the message of the gospel and how it applies to us.
We host 3 to 4 of these groups each year.
Our next Starting Point group will begin in mid-September. Use the Register button to register. If you have any questions, contact Pastor Ed Fedor. He can be reached at the church office at 440-442-6470 or at efedor@cornerstonemayfield.org.
For the rest of our groups:
The group season is split into 3 units:
- Unit 1: first, we’ll study the video teaching material based on the book, Loving Messy People: The Messy Art of Helping One Another Become Like Jesus, by Scott Mehl. (8 weeks)
- Unit 2: then we’ll study the New Testament books of 1 & 2 Thessalonians (11 weeks).
- Unit 3: will be an elective topic of the leader’s choice to finish the last 6-8 weeks of the season.
As we do regularly, we also offer a two-year study on marriage and parenting which is mainly targeted toward parents of younger children (Year 1: marriage, Year 2: parenting. This year will focus on marriage.)
Additionally, we offer a group called, “Starting Point”, where we learn what Christianity is about through the life, teaching, and claims of Jesus Christ as revealed in the Gospel of Mark.
In addition, we offer a class on Biblical Soul Care & Discipleship (Formerly: Fundamentals of Biblical Counseling). Learn more about this course here.
For young adults who are aged 18 to early 30s, we offer Bible study, prayer, fellowship, and activities in our Thrive Ministry. Learn more here.
If you like your group, you can feel free to stay in it from season to season. If you’d like to change your group, you can switch to an open group.
How do I register?
