English as a Second Language

Pathways ESL came into being in the autumn of 2023 as a community outreach offering free English conversation classes to members of our community for whom English is a second language. We have conversations so that our guests can practice speaking English.  The purpose of this ministry is to ultimately share the gospel and invite our guests to embrace faith in Christ.  We use the model developed by Love New Canadians and described in Global Missions Podcast #145, A 3-Step Model for Churches to Reach Out to Immigrants available on any major podcast platform.

The three levels are basic conversation classes, bridge classes, and spiritual interest classes. In basic conversation classes, topics cover everyday subject matter such as the current season or grocery shopping so our guests can learn English. In bridge classes, we will teach vocabulary and spoken English using the Bible as our text (e.g. “What is a temple?  What is a disciple?”). In spiritual interest classes, we will teach the Bible directly and present the gospel. This ministry currently meets on Sunday nights from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall.
